It’s strange how we become aware of a particular philosophy or view and then notice every-increasing references to it. Yes. our antennae are now picking it up where it would have been unnoticed before. The latest revelation in my case is that most things are not black or white. And how many references to this have I noticed in the past week? The latest example being that of a film producer, Mark Batalmai who recently attended the premiere of his film entitled ‘Ukrainian Agony.’

Batalmai shot endless footage in the Ukraine which appears to demonstrate that the western media story was definitely not true. Quelle surprise! The Berlin premiere ended in a standing ovation followed by film crew interaction with the audience. Of course someone suggested that Ukrainian Agony is also propaganda. Batalmai’s response impressed me. He stated that it was his subjective view of the situation and that every journalist produces subjective reports. Batalmai went on to explain that mainstream journalists cannot be dismissed as liars. Many believe in what they are doing and many simply have not taken a step back to look at things from a different angle. Likewise, he continued, the situation in the Ukriane is not black or white, but many shades of grey. It is not a case of the good and the evil. It is far more complex. Indeed.

This applies to so many global situations. Research and experience has led me to take a different view on things than I held twenty years ago. I belong to those who consume alternative media sources and whose world views differs from that of the masses. Yet, there is a disturbing tendency within these groups to reject any deviation from the alternative view. I have noticed that querying and requesting further information can result in being rejected as ‘not one of us’. However, those who have arrived at this place, where the BBC has no place in their lives and where nothing is accepted at face value, obviously have enquiring minds. Thus we question everything. And it seems that some alternative journalists are neither open-minded or accept the many shades of grey that make up reality. You are either with us or you are against us? Sounds like a Bush quotation to me.

We are individuals and should continue to function as such. Informing ourselves, querying things and weighing up the pros and cons to arrive at an opinion, which may frequently change as other information becomes available. No I’m not one of the alternative herd either. Nor should anyone conform or change his opinion to comply with the alternative view.

There are multiple shades of grey and they are ever-changing. We must also be adaptable and have the courage to reject those who demand complete adherence to the alternative mantra. Whatever that is.
